If you have never heard Paul Roberson sing, you are in for a treat. Its also a chance to hear singers who are known for certain songs, sing other materials. This is refreshing to me. Here are the tracks that are only availalbe on the single disc sampler version of this set The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series) 5 Oklahoma from Oklahoma 8 America from West Side Story 13 Cabaret from Cabaret Of course this five disc version has many many more tracks than the sampler but the above three are only on the sampler. [4] Rating: 4 Date: 2006-03-02 Summary: Some interesting choices, indeed ... This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it. "Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show. I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) . Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal. ...more

Of course, it has a variety of Avery's outrageous characters, including the screwy squirrel and others. It also shows Avery's update of classic fairy tales, with Red Riding Hood appearing as a Las Vegas-style showgirl. The animation is also an interesting snapshot of the WWII era in which it was made. There are many references to "ration points" and then-current entertainers. It makes for an amusing history lesson, and gives the modern viewer an ...more

The Bottom Line: The Bedford Incident seems like a film that is heading towards an obvious conclusion for its first 100 minutes or so, and it's often not very interesting while it takes its time heading there...but then the filmmakers pull out the stops with a conclusion far different than the one I was expecting which completely changes the nature of everything that came before it; it's certainly a flawed film, but in its final 5 minutes or so it becomes a surprisingly compelling one. 3/4 ...more

There was a fleetwide teletype communication which came down from Navy command advising all Navy personnel to stay away from this movie. Being of a curious type then and now, myself and a few of my buddies had to get to the movie house as soon as possible to see what all the fuss was about. Since this was a "cold war" era movie I guess we could see what the Navy brass was so upset about. Richard Widmark, who believed so much in this story, ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-09 Summary: OOOPS!!! ... THE BEDFORD INCIDENT(1965)---Richard Widmark, sidney Poitier, Matin Balsam,Eric Portman, Wally Cox, James MacArthur. I like this film a lot. Widmark is one of my favorite actors and he gives an excellent performance as the captain of a destroyer patrolling Arctic waters to keep an eye on Russian submarines. Poitier plays a reporter who comes aboard to do a story about it all---I know it's heretical to say so, but I've never cared much for Poitier---I respect the fact that he broke down a lot of barriers for black actors ...more
